self-portrait

Jimmy Mac is the Editor-In-Chief/Lead Writer of this website.

He grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia, born in the latter half of 1976. His love for music was ignited first by the spandex-clad David Lee Roth and Van Halen, way before things like “irony” and “sarcasm” informed his musical tastes. His parents hired a hot hippy chick to baby-sit him, sometime around 1985, the story goes, who let him stay up too late and watch a program called 120 Minutes back when the M in MTV actually used to stand for music. It was then he discovered perennial ne’er-do-wells like Ian MacCulloch, Robert Smith and his all-time personal favorite, a young Steven Patrick Morrissey.

From this day forward little Jimmy Mac was completely ruined.

He would spend all day on his skateboard, only stopping to hang out in record stores. While there he read British magazines like the NME and Q, and generally scoffed in your direction as you looked at records by INXS and Culture Club. Of course, all this loitering in record shops- he would eventually discover punk rock (only to show up to his first day of the sixth grade and told to turn his Sex Pistols shirt inside out), hip-hop (he at one time, was in fact, the epitome of Public Enemy) and this thing called “college rock” (he still hates J Mascis for kicking Lou Barlow out of the Dinosaur Jr, he was the most talented one for Christ’s sakes).

Then he smoked pot and started binging on jazz, reggae, psychedelia and progressive rock.

Jimmy Mac received his degree in musicology at the ripe old age of 17, while listening to Pavement‘s Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. He then grew a large beard and dropped off the face of the Earth, not to return until just after the start of the new millennium.

The stories of his demise have been greatly exaggerated, mostly by himself.

He currently resides in Oakland, California, with his lovely girlfriend and her gentle pit-bull terrier. He still rides his skateboard as his main form of transporatation, hangs out in record stores and scoffs at people buying Hoobastank and 311 records. He may or may not be a pre-school teacher.

God help the children that learn anything from his twisted and deranged mind.

Spencer Perry – Aspiring Music Geek and web nerd

Spencer is a sad, middle-aged man desperately trying to cling to the last vestiges of his youth by becoming a music geek. He was born on July 25th, 1970 in San Francisco, and while there may have been some hope for him to be a relatively productive member of society, he really has wasted much of his potential at this point. Honesly, Jimmy’s just being nice to him and letting him write reviews from time to time, especially since he built the site (which he somehow manages to do for a living: www.spencerperry.com)
Currently Spencer does whatever he can to avoid being an adult, which can include watching cartoons, eating candy, and getting a master’s degree in creative writing at San Francisco State University.

Porkchop – Contributing Writer

Porkchop was born in late 1979 in the East Bay suburb of Hayward. Her musical journey started out rather sad and embarrassing. She attended her first concert at ten years old. It was the New Kids on the Block. There was still hope for her though because when she hit junior high that whole grunge movement was happening and it opened her up to a whole new world. By the time she was a freshman in high school she had discovered Pavement, The Ramones, and PJ Harvey. It only got better from there. In the summer of 1994 she dropped acid and heard the Pixies for the first time. It was love at first listen.

She has always been surrounded by people with impeccable taste who are much cooler than she is. She has tried very hard to absorb the coolness, but has typically failed. She has however ended up with a pretty good collection of music. She also tried her hand at being a radio DJ at KALX in Berkeley from 2007-2008. She is currently on hiatus because she decided to spawn. She will return to the air when she feels comfortable leaving her son with someone else, which could be a while.

Porkchop currently lives in Oakland with her husband and baby. She has no plans to go back to a normal job any time soon and has already begun to turn her infant into a music snob.

Fozzy Bear – Contributing Writer

Fozzy Bear was born and raised in San Francisco, California. He grew up listening to his mumsy’s Beatles records and then proceeded to steal them, along with her turntable and began to expand his collection further. He digs on a vast array of music but his heart truly lies with soulful voice of Mr. Otis Redding. That being said, one should expect quite a few soul and funk jams comin’ their way in the “Get Familiar With” section, but should not be surprised if he throws a curveball or two. He’s gotta make sure the listeners are on their toes…
